Strep Throat Symptoms, Treatment, and Home Care

Strep throat is a bacterial infection caused by Group A Streptococcus (GAS). It spreads quickly through coughs, sneezes, shared utensils, or close contact, especially among school-aged children. Adults get it as well, but incidence is highest in ages 5 – 15.

Left untreated, strep throat can lead to ear infections, sinus infections, peritonsillar abscess, rheumatic fever, and ongoing transmission to family members. Early evaluation is the safest approach. At BritePath Medical clinic, we provide care for Strep throat symptoms at our locations in Phoenix, Surprise and via Telemed appointments.

Clear Signs You May Have Strep

Strep throat develops suddenly and follows a distinct pattern. Patients typically report:

  • Fever, often high

  • Intense sore throat

  • Painful swallowing

  • Red, inflamed tonsils with white patches

  • Swollen lymph nodes

  • Headache

  • Loss of appetite

  • No cough (often a key differentiator from viral colds)

If these symptoms appear quickly or occur after known exposure, medical testing is required. A rapid strep test or throat culture confirms the diagnosis.

Why Treatment Cannot Wait

Strep throat requires antibiotics. This is not a “wait and see” infection.

Antibiotics:

  • Shorten symptom duration

  • Reduce contagiousness

  • Prevent serious complications

  • Protect people in your home or workplace

Only take antibiotics prescribed after a confirmed positive test. Complete the full course, even if you feel better within 24–48 hours.

Over-the-counter medications such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen may be recommended to control fever and throat pain.

What You Can Do at Home

Supportive care reduces discomfort while antibiotics work.

Hydration and Food Choices

Choose warm, soft, non-irritating foods:

  • Broths and soups

  • Cooked vegetables

  • Mashed potatoes

  • Smoothies

  • Non-acidic juices

  • Blended foods

Avoid foods that worsen irritation:

  • Citrus or acidic foods

  • Spicy foods

  • Rough, crunchy foods

  • Dairy if it increases mucus for you

Rest and Reduce Exposure

Fatigue slows immune recovery. Prioritize sleep and avoid strenuous activity. Staying home prevents you from spreading the infection to others.

Infection Control

Strep spreads easily. Reduce transmission with disciplined hygiene:

  • Wash hands before eating and after coughing, sneezing, or blowing your nose

  • Scrub between fingers and under nails

  • Carry hand sanitizer

  • Avoid sharing cups, utensils, or towels

  • Replace your toothbrush after 24–48 hours of starting antibiotics

When to Seek Medical Care

You should be evaluated the same day if you or your child experience:

  • Fever over 101°F

  • Severe throat pain

  • White patches on the tonsils

  • Trouble swallowing

  • A fine red rash (possible scarlet fever)

  • Known exposure to someone with confirmed strep

  • Recurring or persistent throat infections
